5 Ways To Eat Healthy While Travelling

5 Ways To Eat Healthy While Travelling

I hate when people come back from vacation and tell me that they have to do a whole cleanse or restart their DIET because they’ve gotten off track.

Vacation is about relaxing, enjoying your time… not lining up at the 24 hour buffet!

When I go on vacation sure I like to enjoy food and have a cocktail here and there, but I won’t purposely choose fried and saltier foods.

I’ll still opt for fresh local fruits and vegetables, lean protein and a carbohydrate.

Of course, I’ll have gelato or a croissant, let’s not get crazy, but I actually do think about what I am choosing.

People always ask me how do I fully enjoy what I’m eating, live in the moment… without guilt?

That question makes me think for a few seconds… mhmmm… Well, I just listen to my body.

I know for a fact that if I eat a whole block of cheese that my stomach will hurt instantly or a few hours later.

So, obviously vacation or not, I won’t be choosing dishes with a lot of dairy in them.

Now again, let’s not get crazy! We’re on VACAY, right? So, I don’t normally Yelp or TripAdvisor restaurants before I arrive to my destination. I go with the flow!

I usually like walking in the streets and reading the menus outside or asking for one before I choose to sit down.

But nonetheless, I thought I’d give you my top 5 tips to help you feel amazing after vacation.

Here they are:

Bring or make your own snacks ahead of time. The mandatory prepping other than matching your cute shorts, has to be the snack bag. Counting on healthy snacks, in airplanes/train stations or road trips is a recipe for disaster. Just grab a bag of your favorite treats: nuts, seeds, those chocolate Bark Thins, MadeGood bars or any other snacks. I also like to go to the market when I arrive and buy fresh fruit and leave it in the hotel fridge. So, that was easy, huh?

Don’t snack. I know I know, wait, you just said to prepare a snack bag. Yes I did, but that snack bag is for emergencies… did I not mention that… oh well 🙂 !  We give ourselves way too much permission to snack all day. So what I do is eat breakfast (big smoothie or juice) and munch on fruit and then eat a whole big plate of something delish at supper. Try to keep a normal schedule. Don’t try to over indulge when you’re sightseeing. I know those snack bars can be tempting but that’s why you’ve got your SNACK BAG, right?

Drink your water mama. Make it happen. I don’t care if you’re travelling to the Sahara desert, you need to get your liquids in. This usually means travelling with your reusable water bottle. Guess what? I’ve got the perfect bottle for you. The Big Bottle. One day. One Bottle. Period.

Define your 1,2 or 3 non-negotiables. Non-negotiables are the things you need to do no matter what. For me it’s eating my veggies and fruits, drinking my water and moving at least 30 minutes a day. 1,2 & 3.

And lastly…

Become your own healthy cocktail bartender. Liquid calories are a nightmare. Blended syrupy-frothy looking-ones. Leave it. Here are some of my favourites. Gin and soda with a splash of lemon juice and some tonic. Campari with orange. Tequila shots or vodka with soda and a splash of cranberry juice.

So there you have it. 5 simple tricks to keep you enjoying your vacation long after your back. Being truly healthy isn’t about going extreme.

Nobody is perfect. It’s about consistency with a few big tricks that’ll help you feel fuller for a longer period of time.

 No magic.

Just you bringing your normal everyday routine on vacation.

Trust me you’ll feel good and look good… and not just on vacation!
